  6. Hey Chuck,

Mark Fairhurst here... I see where Christy says you opened an eye for him, that's great. When I swing by again, I'm looking for a handshake! See you soon.

  7. Hi Chuck,
It's Mary Catherine, your cousin, writing to you from Florida. I am happy to hear you are making progress. I was just thinking back to when we were kids and my sister, Jean, & I loved to join the Sandstrom kids at Aunt Vi's in Sinclairville. I have great memories of jumping from haystacks, and running away fromm the bull in the field! Picking rasberries was a little tamer, but was still fun. I was so glad to see you when I was in Jamestown for my class reununion, and had the pleasure of meeting Auburn.I think we need to plan a big reunion when you are well, and gather all those Swedish relatives together, plus all of our extended families. Becky keeps me to up to date with pictures. I love seeing them all.
    Keep doing well, cuz!
Love & prayers to you and all the family!!

  8. Auburn,
As I read the recent updates I smile and know that God is watching over you all. I would ask God for signs every day during Garrett's recovery and now ask them for you. You will find hope, faith and encouragement to make it to the next day with every sign. You are an amazingly strong woman and I am so pleased to have met you during this difficult time. God Bless you all.

    Love ya, Dottie Parker

  15. Hi! I just want to send you a message to let you know that I am praying for you for a complete recovery. My son had a severe traumatic brain injury from a car accident. It sounds like you are in very much the same condition as he was. Well, it has been 2 years since the accident and he is doing great! He is doing everything that he did before the accident. You be encouraged. You have a positive attitude and many people from all around are pulling for you. You're going to make it just fine. I haven't seen your wife in years, but I know she's a special person and you are so fortunate that she's there for you. Love to both of you, Laurie Rivera

Please be assured of our prayers for you and yours. You have always been a great inspiration to me, encouraging me as a young Christian when you came to Yankee Road Church in Middletown. You taught me how to direct music and I am leading worship for two camp meetings this summer because of you.

We're visiting Mom tonight, and we have an opportunity to use a more modern computer. You all are on the Grace Bible Church prayer list too. Our Lord Jesus Christ is merciful and gracious. 28. "Perfect love casteth out fear." Chuck, I was in your hospital room a week ago. I saw no throbbing hearts or fearful anxious eyes. I saw only kind care given to you. It was a great experience during the day to meet five visitors from various organizations who showed deep admiration for you and yes, absolutely expressed the command "to love one another." It was a humbling experience.

  30. Chuck & Auburn,

It was unfortunate that this incident occured. howver we know that God has his hand in this and that He will be glorified.

I want you both to know that you and your family are in my prayers. My Emmaus share group (including Rick Henson & John King from Stonebridge) lifted your family in prayer at this morning's breakfast.

It was encouraging to hear about Chuck's progress. Recovery is a slow process but it gives you an opportunity to share even a deeper love for each other.

Also looking forward to reading about Mandella at Princeton.

  34. When it comes to Chuck's situation time must be spent on making him free. What a waste questioning "why"! Jesus never asked why. He commanded Satin to get behind him. He admonished us "to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease" (Matt 10:1) This power is available now as it was to the disciples who reported back to Jesus that "even the devils are subject unto us through Thy name." 40. REMEMBERED MUSIC

'Tis said, the pipe and lute that charm our ears
    Derive their melody from rolling spheres;
    But Faith, o'erpassing speculation's bound,
Can see what sweetens every jangled sound.

We, who are parts of Adam, heard with him
The song of angels and of seraphim.
Out memory, though dull and sad, retains
Some echo still of those unearthly strains.

Oh, music is the meat of all who love,
Music uplifts the soul to realms above.
The ashes glow, the latent fires increase:
We listen and are fed with joy and peace.

You love life. It is natural, normal, right. Failure is only for him who doubts. Keep thinking "I AM." "I CAN." "I WILL." And press on! Wake up!

And I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate you from undearstanding that there is no power against you. GOOD IS ALL.

This is Shel Schweikert: I was all set to visit you on East Market Street when Paul Holmberg came into Hatties Cafe in Hudson, (where many of us meet for coffee) and said you had moved, but he wasn't sure of your new address. Next thing I know I access this wonderful website and read about your progress. It is really good to know that you are getting stronger each day.

  51. Chuck,Our prayers are with you!We went through this in 1980 when Todd was hit in the head with a softball while playing on our church team. Brain surgery followed to stop bleeding from a fractured skull and blood clot in his brain. A month in a coma and rehab that followed. God is still in control. You seem to be following the same path of coming back as Todd. He came back slowly. His legs moved all the time. His brain seem to slowly wake up. It took many weeks, then therapy, speech and physical. In 6 months he was back in his pulpit. He wasn't 100%. He was a miracle in process! We are asking for a miracle in your recovery. To your wife, stay strong, keep your faith at the lowest times. God will sustain you and give you all the strength you need. Doctors and therapists said Todd would never preach again, but God knew better. We are friends from GBC. We'll keep praying and our church also. Todd & ShirleyGale Wymer

Chuck, I enjoyed meeting you on Easter when my daughter Zoe and I came for a short visit to Uncle Jerry and Aunt Anne's house. You are both in my thoughts and prayers daily. I am looking forward to us all getting together now that Auburn is in northeast Ohio. Stay on course and God will work His wonders.

  57. Auburn,
Hello from the Vanlue community! The Wagner family has been following Chuck's progress and praying for him (and you!) daily. I read your post that said you'd like to hear from more people....we're here!

School is about to start at Vanlue again, minus a dear English teacher. Doesn't that seem like a lifetime ago? It's important for you to know how much you impacted our school and our lives, and you will be greatly missed this year. You might like to know that Jenny attended orientation at OSU last week (along with her parents) and we are very excited for her to begin the next phase of her life! She's all Buckeye and can't wait to get started. I will always feel that your encouragement, not to mention help with essays, played a huge part in getting her to OSU. We'll make sure to update you on her progress. She & Mandela are Facebook friends, so hopefully they'll stay in touch as well.

So glad to hear about your "mercy kidnapping"...being a visual person, I like to picture that! Please take care of yourself...I'd love to sneak away from Vanlue during a non-subbing school day & take you out for lunch and visiting.

More updates from the Wagners and Vanlue, I promise. You're in our thoughts often.

    Love,

    Ruth & the Wagners

When Peggy called this morning and told us you had spoken your name we cried with joy and many people have shared those tears after hearing the news. Every time I walk into the church I am greeted with, "have you heard from Chuck?" We will continue to pray for your complete and whole healing and that God will receive all the honor and Glory of which He is so deserving. 63. Hey brother,
Bill and I were with you when you were in Speciality Services and we have spent alot of time praying over you and with Auburn and your wonderful girls. We are so thrilled to hear of your progress and know that God has been working on your behalf from the very beginning of this ordeal.
We had some laughs over a letter that you wrote to me when Bill and I had just met. You tried to be such a protective "little brother" to Bill and I still love and appreciate your caring for him. You have been a wonderful support to us during some troubled times and I appreciated your visit to Bill when he had his heart surgery. We love you and hold you in our prayers moment by moment and are trusting God for your complete healing.
Just remember, the Drs. gave Bill only a 2% chance of making a comeback from his heart surgery and here he is still giving us alot of laughs and joy. We expect the same from you.
    Your sister, Peg

  65. Chuck,
I was born and raised in Barberton and I have a lot of respect for you for the things that you have done for the city. You have been in my thoughts and prayers since I saw the article in the paper. I work at Manorcare as an STNA and had no idea then that I would have the chance to help care for you. It is so nice to see you improving so much. It almost seems like every night that I come to work you have been doing new things; walking and talking and humming a tune. I am praying for you and your family daily and look forward to seeing your continued improvement. I just found out about these online updates from a coworker and with working 3rd shift this is a great way for me to read about what I miss during the day and on my nights off.
We all look forward to seeing your smile and last night you were all smiles. You are the kind of person that really makes me love my job and makes it all worthwhile. Good luck and keep up the good work. Have a good weekend and I'll see you on Monday!
Auburn, You seem like a very strong woman and I really admire that strength. I only wish that there was more that I could do to help. (I am the one that made the bed with both of you in it if you remember that) You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong.

My name is Scott Perkins and I am a flight attendant with your sister Rebecca. I was a speech pathologist for 20+ yrs and worked with Traumatic Brain Injury for all of those years. If you or any of your family have questions or concerns or want to talk to someone other than your great folks in rehab, feel free to contact me by email, or by your sister, she has my phone number. I wish the best to you and your family! Head injuries not only affect the one that suffered the initial injury but everyone associated with it, and I am pulling for you! Keep your chin up! Stay positive! I have seen patients make progress very quickly, some not as quickly and others slowly. Never ever ever give up! As long as you are alive you are able to learn/relearn any skills that are difficult for you now. Sometimes it may be more difficult to learn/relearn and it may be in a different way than you learned initially, but you can do it! and since we are from the same generation..........i'll leave you with one good quote........"patience Grasshopper!"
    In his gracious love

It's your dear sis-in-law Peg again. Things sound absolutely GREAT in your progress! I always knew you could do it. You are a person who gets what he wants somehow! Usually by perserverance and hard work. I realize that this is probably the hardest work you will ever do but it will be worth it!! You have a family who loves you and will help you as much and in anyway we can. We have been holding you up in prayer constantly, but the sweetest prayer was from our grandson, J. Michael. Last night he prayed at supper, "Please God, help my Uncle Chuck to get better and make him well again".(He's 6 yrs. old.) The Bible says that "a little child shall lead them", and I believe that the prayers of your granddaughters, all 3 of our grandkids, and prayers of all the adults you have praying for you ARE being answered.
We have complete faith in God, our Father, who loves you even more than all your family. He is in charge and you are in the BEST possible hands.
Remember you are loved and we are here for you.

Auburn, Shelley, Stacey, Mandela, your granddaughters and Brent and CJ are prayed for too. It seems we forget about those great sons-in-law you have but we DON'T forget them!! They have been rocks through this and we love them too.
Looking forward to hearing more of your progress so keep up the GREAT work. Peg

  78. Chuck,
What wonderful pictures of the rehab team, and smiling photos of you with your two "girls" as you prepare to say goodbye to one phase of healing and enter the rigorous phase of regaining your strength at Edwin Shaw.
You will be their "hands down favorite" there, I am sure! Your story is a testimony to never giving up, always believing the best and trusting God for miracles.
As you lay unaware for weeks, God used you to do an amazing ministry to the staff at Manor Care, and many individuals that you do not even know, through Auburn and Shelley's website, chuckscircleoflove.com.
I am coming to keep you company tonight. Maybe we will play cards and have a rousing game of Crazy Eights! God Bless - Jean Hamed

  80. Chuck - You are going to WOW them at EDWIN SHAW. Every non-believer in the building better be prepared for the Holy Spirit's power that will be arriving along with the Sandstrom family.
A new chapter, another turn in the road that winds toward home.
Can't wait to come for a visit but i will refrain until the evaluations are complete and you are settled into a routine there.
How wonderful that you are continuing with your Bible verse fill-in-the-blanks and have the power of God's Word still within your mind and your heart. The Enemy tried, but could not rob you of God's Word or your faith, or ability to inspire others.
    God is Good. Jean Hamed

It was great to see you and Auburn out having a walk around the E.Shaw grounds-
I hope you got lots of hugs and kisses on those smoothly shaved cheeks when the grand daughters and Stacey arrived.
Now there's a tongue twister - say "smoothly shaved cheeks" three times fast!
I plan to come early next week and bring some materials that might be helpful cogitive exercises that we can begin to try out whenever you are ready.
I am so glad that I have the privilege of being a witness to your miracle. I can't tell you how excitedly I am sharing your story of hope, faith and courage. I strongly believe that "God will repay you for the years that the locusts have eaten......" Amos 2:25
He has wonderful blessings in store for you and Auburn - blessings of health and of financial aid as well. God is Great.

  86. Hi, My name is Christine Bailey and I work at Edwin Shaw in the Recreational Therapy (RT) Dept. My Mom, Betty, met a family member last night at McDonald's posting to this blog and sent me the account. I was wanting you to know that although we don't have WiFi, we do have internet access in the R.T. room and allow people to plug in their laptops to our internet, or just use our computer, so Chuck can have access to all these wonderful comments and post some himself. We are open M-F and some Saturdays, but the nursing supervisor can let you in during the weekend, when we are not there.
Your family will be in my prayers as Chuck moves ever forward in his recovery.
    God bless you all! Christine

  92. This is "Nea', one of Chuck's little sisters. I had a conversation with Chuck today on the phone, & had to post a comment on his Blog right away!!! We had a REAL conversation, not just a word here & there!!!! Praise God!!! It was so amazing!!! Here is a synopsis of what we said.
I said " Hi Chuck, this is Nea "!!! I am so glad that you are getting better!!! He said " Me too!!! I am working very hard!!! " I said " You are getting good work-outs" He said, " Yes- I am, it's a lot of real hard work"!!! I told him that I saw Rebecca today, & he said " Is she there???? " I told him that she just left. I told him that she sends her love. He said, "She loves me too!!!! " I said " Yes- she does, very much!!!! We all love you"!!!! I said that probably next week, he would be eating food, & he said " I will like that"!!!!Then he said " Good-Bye, Good-Bye"!!! Auburn said that this is the first time that he has talked so much for a while- she was so excited!!!
Right after that, she called Rebecca, & Chuck talked to Rebecca. We are so happy about how he talked today!!! Yeah!!!
Also, one more thing! The last time Rebecca went to visit w/ Chuck, he was talking about the visit. Auburn posted the Blog abt. it, & both Barb & I knew what he said. He said, " Rebecca flies ( he had said "files" ) He also said " I saw Rebecca". When I saw that Blog, I had to E-Mail Rebecca right away, & I could not go to sleep until I did!!! It was later, a couple days after that, when I found out that Barb thought the same thing!!!
In my opinion, brothers & sisters always have a special bond, especially when something happens. One way or another, we reach out to each other, to lift each other up!!!We have always been that way!!!
I will call more often now!!!
    Love,
    "Nea"

  94. Chuck, it has been about 3 weeks since I wrote and so much progress has been made by you! I can't tell you how you have blessed us personally (daily) and our church family. We know we have seen a modern day miracle and are excited about the future completion of it. I can see you as a traveling witness - from church to church and who knows where else - giving your testimony of what God has done. (Make our church your first stop!!) Again, we thank God for good doctors and nurses and therapists, etc., but all honor and praise belong to Him. Too, we thank God for your wife and the strength she has protrayed through it all. We pray for all your family as well as you.

  98. Chuck - it was great to have a real conversation with you and you were a whiz at the Bible game!
I named a Biblical name and you told me if the person was identified with the Old or New Testament. You even got the tricky ones - 10 out of 10 correct! I will have a harder list to challenge you with next time I visit.
And when I asked you if your sister Nea's real name was Neopolitan - like the ice cream, you were able to tell me that neopolitan icecream was made up of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, so that sweet tooth memory is still intact for sure.
I was glad to see that you enjoyed playing cards - it is a good way to pass the time. Tomorrow I will encourage all the auxiliary ladies to log onto this blog and keep up to date with your news. God Bless! Jean Hamed

  101. Hello Auburn,
I am a flight attendant for the company Rebecca works for. I ran into her at the airport on Saturday afternoon and she told me about what has happened to Chuck. I want to tell you what I told her. My brother had an accident 6 1/2 years ago and has a brain injury. They told our family he would never wake up and never be able to walk or talk again. Today my brother drives, walks, talks, laughs, cooks, and mows. He just bought a house and got married last week. After a year and a half in the hospital, he attended brain injury therapy 3 days a week for the next 5 years. God works miracles every single day and I believe in the power of prayer. God bless your family through this journey and I want you to know you will be in our prayers. Stay strong--I know God can work a miracle for Chuck too!! In Christ's love, Anna Rosenquist

You, my friend, will have to be patient and let things heal in there. Try not to get too frustrated with the pace of recovery. It goes as fast as it goes. I know that is not very comforting, but it is hopeful, because, be it ever so slow, progress does come. Let me add my prayers to all the others that are with you.

A few blogs ago it was stated that Chuck had forgiven the attacker. This was a conscious choice to see beyond the veil of tragic personal tribulation.

What a lesson in grace to realize that forgiveness must be done with the eyes of the heart - new eyes that can only be achieved by being awake and aware in Christ.

I salute Chuck and Auburn for giving me lessons in steadfastness - lessons in striving to be a witness. "Ye are my witness, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen."
